VFP meeting with Chairman of Judiciary Committee, Rep. Conyers is CANCELLED
The meeting was partly the victim of our success. Now that the House Judiciary Committee Hearing will be discussing what options Congress can take to restore the balance of power, including the possibility of IMPEACHMENT, it has become high profile and will crowd out the time of our meeting.
Because of this, the rest of our Campaign has taken on greater significance. I
mpeachment is now being considered on the Hill. If you don't want them to form some investigate committee to report back in 2 years, NOW IS THE TIME. Get everyone you can to call their Representative and call the Judiciary Committee members and demand impeachment. These are a critical few days.
July 24th will be VFP's Impeachment Lobbying Day, in Wash, DC but why not at district offices?
July 25th Wash, DC, 10AM - VFP attends Judiciary Committee Hearing, which will now probably overflow to at least one other room.
Remember two months ago we could not even get a meeting to just hand the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee 10,000 impeachment petitions. Then VFP members from Wisconsin gave us their 12,000 petitions to deliver, too. We had to brazenly say, "we are going to the office and sitting there he accepts them or we are taken away in handcuffs" (It was bit brazen because I only know of two of us who were ready to get arrested).
Now the Chairman is scheduling meeting with us, Kucinich asked us for a meeting with us, and most of all impeachment is on the table. But it is only being discussed. The nation and democracy needs impeachment now! We have this brief window of opportunity to make happen what they 2 months ago they said was impossible.
JOIN THE ACTIONS: FOR JUST NEXT 6 CRITICAL DAYS CALL YOUR CONGRESSMAN AND DEMAND IMPEACHMENT.
If they are for impeachment have them push the Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Rep Conyers, to act now. We need as many calls, emails and letters as possible before July 25th. Get Your Friends And Neighbors To Call.
If you are able come to Washington, DC, July 24th will be an impeachment lobbying day; we will personally visit Congressmen demanding impeachment. On July 25th we will attend a Judiciary Committee Hearing.
CALL 202-224-3121 for the house switchboard and LEAVE A MESSAGE FOR YOUR OWN CONGRESSMAN TO IMPEACH. Find your Congressman by ZIP Code
Call a member of the Judiciary Committee (202-225-3951) demand impeachment now. (List of Judiciary Committee members) Maybe your Congressman is on the Judiciary Committee call him again.

Can the netroots change politics? The netroots have yet to change the political machine. Matt Stoller believes that they have only made the existing mechanizations move faster and perhaps more smoothly, but have not disassembled the status quo.
Stoller and many at Netroots Nation believe that a paradigm shift will come when a greater number of people engage in the online medium.
The netroots won the issue of net neutrality, but they have yet to take on the major social justice issues that underscore domestic politics in America.
Matt Stoller is a political consultant and blogger. He has worked in liberal internet politics for five years in a variety of institutional and outsider roles, including blogging for Jon Corzine for Governor in 2005, working in communications and blog outreach for the Democratic National Convention in 2004 where he started the first blog for a national political convention. His consulting clients include or have included MSNBC, Free Press, Actblue, Working Assets, the Sunlight Foundation, NDN, Miramax Books, and They Work for Us.
by David Boyle (Misguide, Misplaced Optimism) (Screw Censure, screw anything but Impeachment, Indictment or War Crimes Charges…I am getting really p..sed! Ed.)
After yesterday's Netroots Nation 2008 session with the Speaker of the U.S. House, I went up and shook Nancy Pelosi's hand and asked her directly whether impeachment and censure are still off the table. She answered that no, censure is not off the table (or even "definitely" not off the table, maybe); and as for impeachment, she again stepped aside from the question, as she did during her answers on the stage, by saying that (inherent) contempt was up to John Conyers. (Earth to Nancy: "contempt" and "impeachment" are separate issues...)
So, while NP offered No Palaver about impeachment, the silver lining is that, as per my (non-used) question from askthespeaker.org, censure is still possible.
Censure may seem like the poor man/woman's substitute for impeachment, but it is better than nothing. It may serve as a worthy epitaph/gravestone for the Bush Administration's reputation, if impeachment can't happen for whatever reason. Politics is the art of the possible, and sometimes you have to get whatever you can when you can.
Alternatively, a censure attempt could be done in another way, i.e., to build up to impeachment, e.g., a massive vote for censure could build up the momentum for impeachment. That is, it could be a weathervane, and also a "signal" that "Yes, you can hold Bush/Cheney accountable!! Who knew! We can do even more than this now!!"
And there may be other alternatives, too: feel free to add your own.
Anyway, felt you should know what she told me. Press Nancy amiably on impeachment, by all means, if you like, but also remember the option of censure that she has left on the table: whether done after a failed impeachment attempt, or before an impeachment attempt, or done now, or done in early January 2009 after an Obama election, or whatever.
And also press the NN staff, God bless 'em, to provide a hot brunch on the last day next year like the last two years. Not many Pittsburgh Steelers are gonna attend Netroots Nation unless they have a hearty meal on Sunday.....

Impeachment of Bush and Cheney (and imprisonment) is the only proper and just remedy, the only moral choice. But America lost its moral compass eight years ...
O'Reilly: "Birth control is not a medical condition, it is a choice"
As the blog Think Progress noted, on the July 17 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, while discussing the issue of whether health insurance plans that cover Viagra should also cover birth control, host Bill O'Reilly asserted: "Viagra is used to help a medical condition -- that's why it's covered. Birth control is not a medical condition, it is a choice. Why should I or anybody else have to pay for other people's choices?" But O'Reilly's assertion is contradicted by professional medical associations that have stated that pregnancy is a medical condition and that "[c]ontraception is medically necessary" for women.
O'Reilly made his comment after airing a Planned Parenthood Action Fund ad that included a clip of Sen. John McCain being asked: "It's unfair how the insurance companies cover Viagra but not birth control. Do you have an opinion on that?" McCain responded: "I don't know enough about it to give you an informed answer." During the segment, O'Reilly also said: "Do I have to buy you dinner before you use the birth control? Give me and every other taxpayer a break, Planned Parenthood."
Dr. Luella Klein, former president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) and then-director of ACOG's women's health issues, was quoted in a May 12, 1998, USA Today article as saying: "Pregnancy is a medical condition, just like impotence. And the cost benefit of preventing pregnancy is much greater than treating impotence." In addition, ACOG's "Contraceptive Equity Toolkit" states that "[m]ost women can become pregnant from the time they are teenagers until they are in their late forties" and that "[c]ontraception is medically necessary to a woman for more than 30 years of her life." The Toolkit added: "To ignore the health benefits of contraception is to say that the alternative of 12 to 15 pregnancies during a woman's lifetime is medically acceptable."
Further, in a May 8, 2007, press release, ACOG stated that "contraception is basic, preventive health care and should be readily available and treated the same as prophylactic therapies for other medical conditions."
Additionally, according to the American Medical Association (AMA) Statement on Family and Medical Leave: "AMA supports policies that provide employees with reasonable job security and continued availability of health plan benefits in the event leave by an employee becomes necessary due to documented medical conditions. Such policies should provide for reasonable periods of paid or unpaid: (1) medical leave for the employee, including pregnancy" [emphases added].
Further, Think Progress quoted from a statement by the National Women's Law Center (NWLC), which states that "[a]ccess to contraception is critical to preventing unintended pregnancies and to enabling women to control the timing and spacing of their pregnancies, which in turn reduces the incidence of maternal death, low birth weight babies, and infant mortality." The NWLC added that the "exclusion of prescription contraceptives from health insurance coverage unfairly disadvantages women by singling out for unfavorable treatment a health insurance need that only they have."
