"The action I am taking is no more than a radical measure to hasten the explosion of truth and justice. I have but one passion: to enlighten those who have been kept in the dark, in the name of humanity which has suffered so much and is entitled to happiness. My fiery protest is simply the cry of my very soul. Let them dare, then, to bring me before a court of law and let the enquiry take place in broad daylight!" - Emile Zola, J'accuse! (1898) -

The Hersch Hit : Will This Be The Big One? A Message From The Bazaar

Washington's drive toward regime change in Iran is only rallying the country around its radical president.

By Michael Hirsh | Newsweek Web Exclusive

Seymour Hersh has an article in the July 7 New Yorker, "Preparing the Battlefield: The Bush Administration steps up its secret moves against Iran." Hersh was interviewed on Democracy Now and on CNN about his research on the Presidential Finding which last year won George Bush new powers and funding to carry out covert operations, including assassinations of government leaders, inside Iran. Hersh traced some of the intense disagreement within the U.S. military and C.I.A. over Cheney's determination to attack Iran, and the new covert programs being put directly under control of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Hersh is sounding the alarm, again, that the Bush regime is pusing for a military strike, and that the military campaign has already begun.

World Can't Wait held 3 programs last week on the responsibility of people living in this country to stop such an attack, attended by hundreds of people. Daniel Ellsberg, Everest, and Gareth Porter spoke in Berkeley. Everest and Porter in Los Angeles, and they were joined by Dr. Ervand Abrahamian in New York.

Larry said, "For over 100 years, as I document in my book, controlling the Middle East has been crucial to global predominance. It's a key geopolitical crossroads - and home to 60% of the world's energy, which is key - central energy source - impacts prices and profitability globally - this month the NYT reported "surging oil prices are beginning to cut into the profits of a wide range of American businesses," skyrocketing price of oil illustrates its centrality economically. not to fueling SUVs but to global domination by controlling the world economy and countries who depend on oil. And that's even more crucial NOW. In pursuit of these objectives, the US pumped oceans of oil and spilled rivers of blood - through coups, covert intrigue, military action, and supporting reactionary tyrants..."

We'll put full reports on the events up soon on worldcantwait.org.

Ken Theisen writes on worldcantwait.org today in The Bush Regime Prepares for War on Iran - What Will You Do to Stop It? that "Keeping nukes out of the hands of the Iranian regime is just the cover for any attack on Iran, just as the so-called weapons of mass destruction were the cover used to invade Iran. No matter what the excuse used to justify an attack against Iran, the war is unjust, against the interests of the people of Iran, the U.S., and in fact the entire world, and must be opposed. Such a war could well be even more destructive of human life and social resources than the Iraq war. Millions could die in Iran and the surrounding region. The war could even lead to a nuclear holocaust. Can you live with yourself if you do not do everything possible to prevent this?"

There is a new effort, out of Mayor Bob Kiss's office in Burlington Vermont, which calls on fellow mayors to sign a resolution to avoid military action with Iran. 32 U.S.mayors have signed on. Read more at Mayors Mobilizing Against a War with Iran.

Stay tuned for more events and actions opposing a US attack on Iran, including as part of protests at the Democratic National Convention in Denver August 25-28.

Yoo won't answer whether Bush can bury someone alive.

Thursday June 26: John Yoo & David Addington testified in Congress, either denying they authored the torture memos that the Bush regime relied on, or refusing to answer questions.

Most of the news coverage centered on Conyers' questioning Yoo over whether the torture memo would allow the President to order a suspect to be buried live Watch

Overall the testimony showed the unrepentant authors of the legal justification of torture continuing publicly to do so. As Phillippe Sands, said in The Green Light, these are war criminals.

1. Website

As many of you may have noticed, the website for R-68 has been completely over-hauled. We hope that printing web pages and navigation of the site will be easier for you. We are still in the process of making changes, so please be patient. The site will also be updated on a regular basis, so please check it daily, or better yet, make it your new homepage and stay on top of all the great events and actions being planned by R-68.

2. Court Dates

Our legal team from the ACLU with assistance from cooperating attorneys Chris Beall and Steven Zansberg has been doing an incredible job. Phase one of our lawsuit has been completed and we feel that all of the necessary information has been released to us from the U.S. Secret Service and the City of Denver. This would not have happened if we did not instigate legal action. Phase two will be challenging the constitutionality of the information. A full day hearing has been scheduled for July 29th. The hearing will include testimony from experts as to the validity of the security plans and if our civil liberties are balanced in the equation. We highly recommend that everyone who is capable of attending the hearing, please do so. Our lawyers are donating thousands of dollars worth of legal services, the least we can do is show our support with our presence. Looks like you have another chance at taking a summer sick day from work and make your time really matter. The location of the hearing is listed below.

Judge Marcia Krieger,

Araj Federal Courthouse,

1929 Stout, 9th Floor, 8:30 am, June 30.

Many films will be followed by a community conversation on the issue, usually facilitated by a special guest knowledgeable on the topic.

Each week of film will correspond with the "DAYS OF RESISTANCE" at the Festival of Democracy to start Sunday, August 24-Thursday, August 28.

1. Daylight Robbery Iraq: What happened to the $23 Billion (not released in the US)

On Tuesday, June 10, 2008 the BBC in the UK aired this informative program about the estimated $23 billion that was lost, stolen or not properly accounted for in Iraq. Most of this money came from US taxpayers, who are totally unaware of this story.

Mission Against Terror-

The Cuban Five are five Cuban men who are in U.S. prison, serving four life sentences and 75 years collectively, after being wrongly convicted in U.S. federal court in Miami, on June 8, 2001. They are Gerardo Hernández, Ramón Labañino, Antonio Guerrero, Fernando González and René González. The Five were falsely accused by the U.S. government of committing espionage conspiracy against the United States, and other related charges.

IMMIGRANT RIGHTS

http://www.opencityworks.com/wetback/

Wetback:

The Undocumented Documentary is an excellent film by Arturo Pereze Torres and Heather Haynes. It shows the issue of immigration into the US from the side of the undocumented worker. We all know the side of the vigilantes. All we have to do is watch anyone on Fox to get that side. But, what do we really know about the other side. The Smoking Gun's expose of A Million Little Pieces showed us that what we think is true often isn't. Wetback shows us the poverty that drives workers across our borders, poverty that causes them to literally risk life and limb to get something for their family. It also shows the gains to the US and other American countries from the undocumented workers in this country.

ENVIRONMENTAL RIGHTS

CRUDE-THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY OF OIL:

From the food on our tables to the fuel in our cars, crude oil seeps invisibly into almost every part of our modern lives. Yet many of us have little idea of the incredible journey it has made to reach our petrol tanks and plastic bags. This is a special broadband companion website to this landmark documentary.

THE MURDER OF FRED HAMPTON: Fred Hampton was the leader of the Illinois Chapter of the Black Panther Party. This film depicts his brutal murder by the Chicago police and its subsequent investigation, but also documents his activities in organizing the Chapter, his public speeches, and the programs he founded for children during the last eighteen months of his life.

We are making some large over-sized puppets that will be used to convey a powerful political message during the marches and events. If you have never made a political puppet, this is a great chance to learn this creative skill. All necessary puppet-making materials will be supplied, as will instructional materials. Bring drinks, snacks, and creativity; wear clothing you don't mind having covered in papier-mache and paint.

6. Re-create 68 working meetings

We are consistently receiving e-mails as to how people can get involved. Aside from the 12-step program in the last R-68 e-news flash, the best way is to attend an R-68 working meeting held every Thursday. An event this large can only happen with your help. If you cannot attend a meeting, please consider donating to R-68 by clicking on our donate link on the home page of the website. We are a Colorado non-profit so you can donate part or all of your stimulus check and have it be a tax deduction. Another way to assist us is if you are a member of a group that would like to table or conduct a teach-in on a topic of interest to you and your organization at the Festival of Democracy, contact us at info@recreate68.org.

7. Come Up To Denver

We would like to thank the great work of the "Come Up To Denver" organization for re-writing the Crosby, Stills and Nash song "Come to Chicago". This is a great rallying call to the nation to make their way to Denver. At the CSN concert in Denver last week, Graham Nash dedicated the song to Governor Bill Ritter.

*We would like to clarify a point in our last e-news flash. We referred to the work of "Come Up To Denver" as being done by a "member" of R-68. R-68 does not have any official membership and is an alliance of groups. We strongly, we repeat, strongly support the "Come Up to Denver" crew and believe the feeling is mutual. Keep up the good work folks.

You can down load the song for free and watch the video at www.comeuptodenver.org

8. A Blast From the Past

We were reminded that we used to include words of wisdom from those who came before us and have not done so recently. As always, this does not represent positions of R-68 and are for entertainment purposes only. Enjoy!

Abbie Hoffman:

"The problem with the Left is that there are 10,000 socialist scholars in this country and not one fuckin' socialist. I mean I talk to guys on The Guardian and they say yeah, we're working on a serious analysis of the Yippies. I say, that's pretty fuckin' cool, man, that's great. By that time there won't be any Yippies. I mean, what the fuck are you analyzin' for, man, get in and do it."
