"The action I am taking is no more than a radical measure to hasten the explosion of truth and justice. I have but one passion: to enlighten those who have been kept in the dark, in the name of humanity which has suffered so much and is entitled to happiness. My fiery protest is simply the cry of my very soul. Let them dare, then, to bring me before a court of law and let the enquiry take place in broad daylight!" - Emile Zola, J'accuse! (1898) -

Kucinich threatens 60 impeachment articles if Judiciary doesn’t act

Editorial: Articles of Impeachment : Footnote to disaster

More than half the members of the U.S. House of Representatives voted last week to send articles of impeachment against President Bush to the lower chamber's Judiciary Committee. Of course, most of the lawmakers considered their "yes" vote the equivalent of sending Dumbo to the elephant graveyard, from which it would never be seen or heard again.

The articles' author, U.S. Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D., Ohio), has been written off derisively, both within and outside the halls of Congress, for having launched the impeachment process. Such was also the case last year, when Kucinich first sought to bring Vice President Cheney to trial, alleging he spewed a catalog of lies to bring America to war with Iraq.

Kucinich's effort, at this point, is counterproductive. Were it to proceed, it would bog down government in partisan rancor that would make the current state of battle between congressional Democrats and Republicans look like a church picnic. And with the Bush presidency down to months, many are asking: What's the point?

Well, there is a point, and give Kucinich credit for trying to make it. Each day, Americans are gaining more detailed information that suggests it was not so much erroneous intelligence that led the Bush administration to conclude war was necessary; it was hubris. The president and Cheney discounted any counterargument to war because their minds were already made up. They refused to believe they could be wrong.

In fact, evidence suggests they didn't care if they were wrong about Saddam Hussein's having weapons of mass destruction. He was a bad player and they wanted him out of the way. The result, they believed, would be a remaking of the Middle East, with democracy rooted in Iraq blossoming throughout the land.

McClellan: Administration 'Has Chosen to Conceal' Truth

John Nichols Fri Jun 20, 3:35 PM ET

The Nation -- Former White House spokesman Scott McClellan told Congress Friday that the Bush-Cheney Administration continues to conceal information about abuses of power committed to punish former Ambassador Joe Wilson for challenging the President's storyline with regard to the "need" to invade and occupy Iraq.

"This matter continues to be investigated by Congress because of what the White House has chosen to conceal from the public," McClellan told the House Judiciary Committee. "Despite assurances that the administration would discuss the matter once the special counsel had completed his work, the White House has sought to avoid public scrutiny and accountability."

Rep. King: "Could You Not Have Taken Some Of This To The Grave With You"

By Andrew Tilghman - June 20, 2008, 2:57PM

Scott McClellan isn't offering much in the way of new revelations about the Plame affair during his testimony on Capitol Hill today but there has been a moment or two of good political theater.

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) asked whether McClellan's very presence today was poisoning the relationships between all future presidents and their press secretaries.

The FISA Disaster

http://dailygotham.com/aggregator

There's not much to add to what Phil writes here on the shameful, catastrophic, un-American bill that passed the House today, the one that gives telecom companies legal immunity for spying on American citizens and retroactively legalizes the Bush administration's orders to do so.

The House today overwhelmingly approved a sweeping new surveillance law that effectively would shield telecommunications companies from privacy lawsuits for cooperating with the Bush administration's warrantless wiretapping program.

Ending a year-long battle with President Bush, the House approved, 293 to 129, a re-write of the 1978 Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) that extends the government's ability to eavesdrop on espionage and terrorism suspects while providing a legal escape hatch for AT&T, Verizon Communications and other telecommunication firms. The companies face more than 40 lawsuits that allege they violated customers' privacy rights by helping the government conduct a warrantless spying program after the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"Warrantless" - such a benign expression, isn't it? The better word for it is "in violation of the Fourth Amendment", but that would be too, well, in-your-face for the stewards of our public welfare to contemplate.

The ten Democratic representatives who voted for this monstrosity in our state, and who should be primaried as the barest tolerable retribution for this offense against the Constitution and your rights as a citizen, are:

Declaring War on Steny Hoyer and the Bush Democrats (We don’t have any choice any longer but to purge our party of those who refuse to represent us and stand up for what our party stands for.)

On Thursday and Friday, the American people were betrayed twice by Steny Hoyer and the Bush Democrats.

On Thursday, 80 Bush Democrats voted to give George Bush another $163 billion to occupy Iraq and plunder its oil for another year, even though 68% of Americans want to bring our troops safely home this year.

On Friday, 105 Bush Democrats voted to give immunity to George Bush and the telecoms for illegally wiretapping American citizens even before 9/11, and to allow Bush and the telecoms to keep doing it, thereby shredding the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution.

We're red hot with anger. But as the saying goes, "don't get mad - get even."

As of today, we're getting even - by declaring war on Steny Hoyer and the Bush Democrats. With your support, we will defeat them one by one until all of them are replaced by an "Aggressive Progressive" Democrat, or until they see the light change their wretched votes.

And we're starting today with John Barrow (GA12), who betrayed us on both votes. Watch Barrow pledge his complete devotion to George Bush during Friday's warrantless wiretapping debate.

Georgia's primaries are on July 15 - just 3 weeks away. And Barrow is facing a dramatic primary challenge from State Senator Regina Thomas. Thomas doesn't just look different - she thinks different. She wants to bring our troops safely home from Iraq immediately. And here's what she told me on Friday:

I was really appalled at the actions of Congress and especially my Congressman from the 12th District in Georgia, John Barrow, for voting in favor of the Bush-Republican surveillance bill that would make it very easy, without a warrant, to wiretap any American citizen.

On Friday, Regina Thomas became our first endorsed candidate of 2008. And that was not just because she's an "Aggressive Progressive" - but also because she can win.

In Georgia's Democratic Presidential primary on February 5, 70% of the voters in GA12 were African-American. Thomas isn't running on her race, though, but rather her record of accomplishment over 12 years in the state legislature. This has Barrow running for his political life by avoiding every chance to debate Thomas because he simply cannot compete.

In a few hours, our endorsement raised over $1,176 from 31 donors. Today we'd like to raise $20,000 by encouraging 2,000 of our 500,000 subscribers to contribute $10 each.

Can you help?

In 2005-6, we raised nearly $80,000 for pro-impeachment House candidates through ImpeachPAC (and helped elect Keith Ellison in MN05), so I know what we're capable of.

Let's send a message to Steny Hoyer and his Bush Democrats: that the Democratic Party belongs to us and starting today we're taking it back.

Thanks for all you do!
